Chants roll; Gilmore seeks 1,000th victory at Clemson

ccubase-gk young vs pitt 2 (3)Coastal Carolina’s G.K. Young and Connor Owings each hit home runs and combined to drive in five as the Chanticleers won the weekend series with a 9-3 victory at Radford Sunday afternoon.

The Chants (17-20, 8-7 Big South) won heir third straight league series against the Highlanders (18-16, 8-7) as CCU skipper Gary Gilmore won his 999th game as an NCAA Division I head coach.

Young, a Conway High product, was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Owings was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Tyler Chadwick, Kyle Jackson and Steven Whitaker each contributed two hits.

After being the tough-luck loser in his last three outings, Chase Adkins (1-3) picked up his first collegiate win. The freshman pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with no walks and three strikeouts.

Mike Morrison entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with two runners on and CCU clinging to a four-run lead. He walked the first batter, but responded with a strikeout. The sophomore then closed out the game to earn his first career save.

On Saturday, Owings hit the second pitch of the game for a double and scored. Today, Owings once again had success on the second pitch of the game, hitting a home run to straight away center field over the 400-foot mark. The blast was Owings’ second of the season.

The Chants padded their lead with three runs in the second. Young and Jackson started the frame with a double and single, respectively, to put runners on first and third. Colin Hering followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Young and move Jackson to second. With two outs, Whitaker traded places with Jackson, hitting an RBI double. Owings made it 2-for-2 on the day – and his seventh straight hit over two days – with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, plating Whitaker.

Coastal kept the pedal down in the third, scoring twice to take a 6-0 lead. Chadwick hit a leadoff single and, two batters later, scored on Young’s two-run home run to left center field, marking the freshman’s second round-tripper of the season.

In the fourth, Owings was hit by a pitch, took second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Chadwick to put the Chants up 7-0.

Radford got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Alexander Lee singled and Hunter Higgerson hit a two-run home run to left center field.

The Highlanders cut their deficit to four, 7-3, with a run in the eighth. Patrick Marshall hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a fly out and scored on Higgerson’s sacrifice fly to deep center.

Coastal was facing a bases loaded situation, but Morrison recorded a strikeout to keep the score 7-3.

The Chants then got some breathing room in the top of the ninth. Whitaker had a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. After Paez walked, Chadwick’s brought home Whitaker with a sacrifice fly. On the play, Paez advanced to second then, with no one covering third, moved up 90 feet. Young provided the 9-3 final with an RBI single, scoring Paez on the play.

Coastal Carolina closes this nine-game road swing on Tuesday with a trip to nationally-ranked Clemson.
