Chants run away with nine events at CCU Invitational

The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track and field team combined to win nine events Saturday on the final day of the CCU Invitational.

Sophomore sprinter Joseph Wilson led the way with a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter races. On the women’s side it was team effort in the 100 meter race as the Chants took the top five spots on the podium led by senior Darriale Henley.

Wilson won the men’s 100 meter dash with a time of 10.87 while taking the 200 in a time of 21.68. Henley led the women’s contingent in the 100 with a time of 12.00 while sophomore Qwontajah Thompson finished second (12.07), freshman Teka Simpson finished third (12.23), sophomore Ruby Durham finished fourth (12.23) and junior Gabrielle Lee took fifth (12.30). Simpson also took third in the high jump with a height of 1.65 meters while freshman Raven Hamilton finished fifth (1.60m).

Thompson also finished second (24.54) in the 200 meter race while Simpson took third (24.94). Thompson picked up a win as part of the 4×400 relay team as well. Simpson also took third in the high jump with a height of 1.65 meters while freshman Raven Hamilton finished fifth (1.60m). Freshman Jessica Gelibert had a first-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (1:00.05) and finished third in the 100 meter hurdles (14.19) while anchoring the Chants winning 4×400 team. Junior Ashley Davis took first in the 100 meter hurdles just ahead of Gelibert with a time of 13.93.  The 4×400 team finished two seconds ahead of second-place Howard with a time of 3:47.91.

Freshmen Kelila Naules and Amirah Al-Bayyinah finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s triple jump with distances of 11.44 meters and 11.21 meters.

On the men’s side junior Ronnie Jackson finished fourth in the 100 meter race with a time of 11.01 just .14 of the winning time set by Wilson. In the 200 the Chants placed two more in the top five behind Wilson as sophomore DeAndra Lipscomb finished fourth (22.07) and freshman Deion Wellington finished fifth (22.22).

Lipscomb picked up a victory in the 400 meter race with a time of 48.52 while Wellington finished fourth with a time of 49.19. Freshman Matthew Lights took the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.33 while sophomore Carrington Fernandors finished fifth (56.39).

Lipscomb, Wilson, Lights and Wellington teamed up to take the 4×400 relay finishing over two seconds ahead of second-place Liberty.

Freshman Desmond Wallace finished second in the 110 meter hurdles followed by fifth-place finisher Fernandors. Wallace had a time of 14.50 while Fernandors came in at 15.24. Freshman Wesley Edwards and sophomore Reggie Nelson finished second and third in the high jump while junior JaDarrell Barnette placed second in the triple jump.

The Chants final top-five finisher was junior Ryan Beckley who placed fifth in the 800 meter race with a time of 1:56.86.

Coastal returns to competition March 14, 15 and 16 as CCU hosts the Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium.
