CCU scores Top 10 ranking

The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team is now officially a Top 10 nationally ranked program.

The Chanticleers, who currently have a 10-game winning streak, advanced three spots to 10th in the Soccer America poll for their highest ranking this year.

CCU also moved up five spots to 12th in SoccerTimes.com, 13th in both the CollegeSoccerNews and National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings while holding the 23rd spot in the latest RPI.

The Chanticleers remain atop the NCAA rankings with 49 total goals and 3.06 goals per game. They moved into third place in winning percentage (.875), 28th in goals against average (.810), 56th in save percentage (.783) and 78th in shutout percentage (.310).

A 6-0 win over the Winthrop Eagles Saturday earned the Chanticleers at least a share of the Big South regular season championship with two games remaining. A win against the Blue Hose will ensure Coastal’s 10th Big South regular season title while securing the #1 seed in the Big South Tournament.

Forward Ashton Bennett remains in a tie for first place in the NCAA with 41 total points and 2.56 points per game. He ranks second in total goals (18) and goals per game (1.13) after scoring two goals in one game last week. Bennett has recorded two hat tricks this year and five multi-goal games. He has also recorded six game-winning goals and two multi-assist games this year while ranking 92nd in total assists (5). He currently ranks tied for fifth in the Coastal Carolina annuals for single season goals scored.

Freshman Ricky Garbanzo moved into 48th place with six total assists and 61st in assists per game (.38).

With four shutouts this season, Scott Angevine moved into sole possession of third place on the all-time shutout list in Coastal Carolina history with 15. The Kansas City, Kan., native only needs one more clean sheet to tie the all-time record of 16 held by Chris Malinky (1997-2000) and Neal Robinson (1993-96). Also, Angevine moved up to 34th in the nation with a .842 goals against average and 85th in save percentage (.768) after combining with Montrell Morgan for the Chants fifth shutout this year.

Coastal takes to the road for its final regular season away game this season on Wednesday against Presbyterian College. Kick-off slated for 7 p.m.
