Chants shoot the lights out to hold off Battling Bishops

ccuhoops-35layupJaylen Shaw scored a career-high 18 points as Coastal Carolina chalked up a 98-73 victory over NC Wesleyan in front of 1,538 fans Wednesday evening at the HTC Center.

Joining Shaw in double-figures was Elijah Wilson with a Coastal game-high 22 on eight field goals.  Shivaughn Wiggins chipped in 14 points, while Badou Diagne double-doubled with 10 points to go with 11 rebounds and Colton Ray-St Cyr added 10 points. Kevin Holmes Jr. made his Chanticleer debut, scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds.

The Chanticleers outshot the Eagles 56.9 percent to 41.2 percent from the field, out-rebounded them 38-35 and dominated 42-28 in the paint.

The Battling Bishops were led by D.J. Weaver with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, while Devontae Williams added 14.

Coastal began the game with a 12-4 run, including at least two points by five different Chants. NC Wesleyan hung around and twice cut CCU’s lead to a single possessions, but each time Shaw responded with a 3-pointer. Coastal led 30-20 before NC Wesleyan used a 3-pointer and a dunk by Williams to trim its deficit to 30-25 with 4:30 to go in the half. Coastal then ended the half on a 14-6 run as Wilson capped the opening 20 minutes’ scoring with a 3-pointer from the right wing.

The Chanticleers led 44-31 at halftime after hitting on 16 of 28 field goal attempts and outrebounded their opposition 17-14.

Coastal expanded their lead to 20 points over the Battling Bishops with a 17-5 run through the middle stages of the second half en route to putting the game away for good.

The Chanticleers are off until Monday, Dec. 14 when they return to action at Wofford for a 7 p.m. tipoff on ESPN3. The meeting will mark the first on the hardwood between the two institutions, despite the South Carolina schools being less than 250 miles apart.
