Chants sign three golfers to National Letters of Intent

Coastal Carolina Director of Golf Allen Terrell announced Alfredo Ruiz (Mexico), Olle Widegren (Sweden) and Christopher Williams (West Virginia) have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Chanticleer men’s golf team for the 2013-14 season.

Ruiz (Atizapan, Mexico) is a member of the Mexican National Junior Golf team. Also, he was a member of the Associacion de Golf del Valle de Mexico (AGVM), which won two national team championships. He additionally trained at the Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy. Ruiz won the gold medal at the Mexican National Olympics with rounds of 68-67, won the Mexican Federation National Junior Tournament “Copa Centro” with rounds of 71-79-70 and placed fourth at the “I Copa Laguna” with rounds of 73-73-78. Internationally, Ruiz placed second at the HCBC China Junior Golf Open, carding a 214 (70-71-73) over 54 holes, finished seventh at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship, played at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with rounds of 69-72-72-77 and carded rounds of 69-71-69 to [place 14th at the AJGA Golf Pride Junior Classic at Southern Pines, N.C. Ruiz attends Sierra Nevada HS in Naucalpan, Mexico.

Widegren (Danderyd, Sweden) was on the Swedish Junior National team that won European Men’s Team Championship in Madrid, Spain, in 2009. In fact, Widegren won the deciding match in the tournament. He qualified to play in the 2012 R&A Boys Amateur Championship and he won the Galvin Green Junior Open, shooting 71-73, on the Junior Masters Invitational tour. In addition to his golf talent, Widegren was a standout hockey player and tennis player. He was additionally named the “Ballboy of the Year” at the 2007 and 2010 ATP’s Stockholm Open. His brother, Pontus, was a standout at UCLA, represented Europe on three Palmer Cup teams and has played in six European PGA Tour events as an amateur. Widegren attends Danderyd Gymnasium.

Williams (Scott Depot, W. Va.) is a two-time AAA All-State honoree as he led his team to four West Virginia AAA state tournament appearances, finishing third three times and fourth once. He was also tabbed the West Virginia Golf Association Junior of the Year. Helping that cause was Williams winning the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Webb Simpson Junior Championship at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center’s Players Course in North Carolina, shooting a 54-hole score of 201. He maintained the first place position throughout three events of the Championship, carding 64- 68-69 for his 201 on the 7,026, par 72 course. He also won first place on the Top Flite Junior Tour at the Resort at Glade Springs, Lewisburg Elks, Guyan Country Club, Sugarwood Golf Club and the Pine Country Club. He additionally won events on the Kentucky Junior Golf Tour (Stonecrest Golf Club), Optimist Qualifier (Sleepy Hollow Golf Club) and Optimist second Round Qualifier (Crooked Creek). He was the low junior at both the West Virginia Open and West Virginia Amateur. During the summer of 2011, Williams won events on the Top Elite Junior Tour and Tar Heel Tour while qualifying for the West Virginia Open and West Virginia Amateur. Williams, who is in the National Honor Society, was also named Academic All-State in baseball while at Winfield HS.
