Chants stampede Cowboys, one win away from CBI title

ccuhoops-cbiCoastal Carolina had six double-digit scorers in the Chanticleers 90-81 win over Wyoming in game one of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

Demario Beck, Jaylen Shaw and Michel Enanga came off the bench as all three players scored 15 points.  Elijah Wilson and Colton Ray-St Cyr added 14 and Artur Labinowicz scored 10 as CCU (20-17) shot 47 percent from the field.

It was the second time this season CCU had six double-digit scorers and the third consecutive game where all five starters have reached double digits.

The Chanticleers hit eight of its 21 three point field goals for 38 percent, but CCU struggled at the free throw line only knocking down 15 of its 26 attempts.

While the Chants led for over 37 minutes of the game, Wyoming (21-15) would never go away as they hit 13 three point field goals over the course of the game and with CCU’s free throw shooting kept making runs and actually cut a CCU 13-point second half lead (60-47) down to six (67-61) before CCU was able to pull back away.

While the Chanticleers were able to pull out the win, it may have come at a huge loss.  CCU was already playing without starting point guard Shivaughn Wiggins, Colton Ray-St Cyr, who was playing one of his best games of the season, went down in the second half and will miss the rest of the tournament.

As if that was not bad enough, Demario Beck went down just a couple of minutes later and his availability for the final game or two of the tournament will be made later tonight.

CCU did out rebound Wyoming 46-34 with Ray-St Cyr’s seven leading the way. Wilson had six and Beck, Labinowicz and Shaw added five each.

CCU outscored Wyoming 46-20 in the paint and turned 15 turnovers into 18 points.  18 of the Chants rebounds were on the offensive end and led to 17 second chance points.

Wyoming came into the game as one of the top 20 scoring teams in the nation and showed why in scoring 81 points.  The Cowboys shot 44 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the three point line and hit 71 percent of their free throws.

Jason Mcmanamen scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Cowboys in double digits.  Alan Herndon scored 14, Justin James added 12 and Hayden Dalton came off the bench to score 11.

CCU carried a 44-35 lead into the locker room at halftime as the Chants shot 49 percent from the field with 20 of those 44 points coming from the paint.  Ray-St Cyr led the way with 11 and Wilson added eight.

The Chants defense faced 10 turnovers adding seven steals and scored 12 points off those turnovers.  CCU also had 17 rebounds.

The visitors hit six three point field goals and shot 46 percent from the field with Mcmanamen’s 10 points leading the way.  Dalton came off the bench to score eight.

Game two of the Championship Series will be played Wednesday March 29 in Laramie, Wyo.  Game time for that game will be 9 p.m.
