Chants start writing sequel to ’16 summer blockbuster

ccubase-celebrateForget about “X-Men: Apocalypse”, “Star Trek Beyond”, and “Suicide Squad”. The summer blockbuster of 2016 was staged by the Coastal Carolina baseball team with an improbable run to the national championship that was Straight Outta Hollywood.

The Chanticleers begin to write the sequel Friday when they host the 18th annual Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach tournament, but not without some final fanfare to celebrate their triumph at the College World Series last June.

Coastal will hold special events for three days, beginning with Friday’s title defense opener against Richmond at Springs Brooks Stadium. The 4 p.m. pregame will include a national trophy unveiling on the concourse behind home plate, and on-field recognition for 2016 National Coach of the Year Gary Gilmore, who will also throw out the first pitch. Postgame fireworks will cap the celebration.

In Saturday’s game against Western Carolina at 2 p.m., Coastal will host a national championship ring ceremony, raise the national championship flag, and features on-field remarks from school officials and former players during the pregame ceremony. The Jumbotron will feature video tributes to the team, and representatives from the Omaha Concord Club, CCU’s host at CWS, will throw out the first pitch.

In Sunday’s 1 p.m. game against James Madison, former members of the national championship team will throw out the first pitch. Coastal closes out the tourney Monday at noon against St. John’s.

All four of Coastal’s games will be played at Springs Brooks Stadium, with other games held at TicketReturn.com Stadium in Myrtle Beach. Tickets are still available and will be sold at the main ticket booths while the last.
