Chants stay atop FCS poll; Brown earns more honors

ccufoot-goallineFor the third consecutive week, the Coastal Carolina football program holds the top spot in the FCS Coaches poll. Also, for the second straight week, the Chanticleers are ranked #2 in the STATS FCS top 25 poll.

Coastal Carolina garnered 18 of a possible 26 first-place votes for a total of 631 points. Four-time defending national champion North Dakota State, who had four first-place votes, is second with 617 points, followed by Jacksonville State (three first-place votes and 591 points), Villanova (579 points) and Illinois State (531 points). Seventh-ranked South Dakota State received the only other first-place vote.

Chanticleer opponents to make the FCS Coaches poll include Liberty at #10, while South Carolina State, Charleston Southern, Furman and Western Illinois were among those receiving votes.

In the national poll of media and sports information directors, Jacksonville State is the nation’s top-ranked program, receiving 93 of a possible 158 first-place votes for 3,834 points. Coastal is ranked second, earning 36 first-place votes and 2,676 points. The next four schools in the STATS poll received first place votes including #3 North Dakota State (17 and 3,555 points), #4 Illinois State (2 and 3,353  points), #5 Villanova (4 and 3,346 points) and #6 South Dakota State (6 and 3.049 points).

Liberty is ranked 10th in the STATS FCS top 25 as well. Western Illinois (35th), Furman (36th), Bryant (37th), South Carolina State (39th) and Charleston Southern (48th) were all among those receiving votes.

The Chanticleers are back in action in Brooks Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26 to host Bryant. Kickoff for the Family Weekend game is set for 6 p.m.

* Coastal Carolina junior Devin Brown continues to live up to his preseason All-American honor as he was named the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week and, for the second time in three weeks this season, selected the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week.

Brown returned his fifth career kickoff for a touchdown as top-ranked Coastal Carolina defeated Western Illinois 34-27 this past weekend. His career total is a Big South record and just one shy of the NCAA FCS all-time mark of six set by Hampton’s Jerome Mathis from 2001-04.

For the game, Brown returned five kicks for a school-record 195 yards, which is the seventh-best, single-game total in league history.
