Chants still seek first win after tough tie with UAB

ccusoc-10uabDespite a 27-9 shot differential – including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal – the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in 110 minutes of action Monday afternoon as the Chanticleers played the UAB Blazers to a scoreless draw at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

The double overtime draw moves Coastal to 0-2-1 on the season, while UAB now sits a 1-1-2. Monday’s game marked Coastal’s home opener for the 2016 season. The Chants remain at home for their next contest, a 7 p.m. match against in-state rival South Carolina on Friday.

The Chants were led in the contest by the five shots of junior midfielder Louis Dargent, who put two of his attempts on frame. Henrick Muller and Frantzdy Pierrot followed with four shots apiece. Junior goalkeeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz got the start in net for Coastal, and went untested for the entirety of the match as UAB did not place a single shot on frame.

The game remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes as neither side registered a shot on goal. Coastal held the advantage in chances, however, outshooting the Blazers 6-2. The best scoring opportunity of the half came in the game’s opening minutes when a Chanticleer cross into the box found the foot of Pierrot, though the junior forward was unable to finish the play, sending the one-timer high over the crossbar.

Eight of Coastal’s 10 scoring chances came in the second half, including four in the period’s first 20 minutes. Dargent accounted for two of the chances, while Pierrot, Miguel Gutierrez, Martin Melchor, Jair Espinoza, Wes White and Elis Bjornsson each got a look at net.

UAB opened the first overtime period with a threatening free kick courtesy of Massimo Ferrin, who placed a 24 yard strike off the crossbar. Coastal also had a good scoring opportunity in the second overtime. On free kick just outside the box, Einar Einarsson put the ball past the UAB wall, but Joe Kuzminsky made one of his 10 saves in the match. Overall, the Chants put two shots on goal during the extra 20 minutes of play, but to no avail as the match ended without a goal scored.
