Chants strand 16 to set up rubber match with Bucs

ccubase-paezCoastal Carolina loaded the bases in four separate innings but could only manage one run in a 3-1 loss to Charleston Southern Saturday evening at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chanticleers (11-16, 2-5 Big South) out-hit the Buccaneers (16-13, 2-6) 10-7, but stranded 16 base runners in the loss.

Coastal Carolina loaded the bases in the first and second innings while putting two runners on in the third but the Chanticleers came away empty each time.

Charleston Southern would strike first, scoring once in the top of the fourth. The Buccaneers put together three consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. Then Chase Adkins picked an inopportune time to walk his first batter as Zack Hagaman forced home Chase Shelton on the free pass. The Chants limited the damage as Zach Remillard made a nice play to record an out at home and Adkins followed with a strikeout.

The Buccaneers once again loaded the bases in the fifth, this time with no outs. Alex Tomisovich extended his nation’s best active hit streak to 22 games with a single and Nate Blanchard reached on an error. Bobby Ison singled and, as it did in the fourth, Charleston Southern used a walk to force in the game’s second run with Shelton getting credit for the RBI. Blanchard made the score 3-0 as he scored when Nick Berry grounded into a double play.

Coastal broke through in the sixth, scoring once to make the score 3-1. After loading the bases with one out, Tyler Chadwick looped an RBI single to right field, scoring Nick Oberg on the play. Tyler Weekley limited the damage by recording a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.

The Chants threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. However, CSU relief pitcher Joe Pistacchio induced an inning-ending ground ball to keep the score 3-1.

CSU starter Levi Mauldin (3-1) was credited with the win, scattering seven hits and five walks while allowing just one run in 7.1 innings. Austin Weekely worked a perfect ninth innings to earn his sixth save of the season.

Coastal Carolina starter was the tough-luck loser, falling to 0-2 on the season. He allowed six hits, three runs (one earned) and one walk with two strikeouts.

The two teams will meet in the rubber match of the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
