Chants suit up in full pads for first time for thud drills

After a mandatory four days wait, the Coastal Carolina football team had its first practice in full pads Monday afternoon as part of a two-hour session.

“I was pleased with our first day in full pads,” said second-year head coach Joe Moglia. “The weather was great. While it was hot, it was not quite as humid. I think we are on a good path. However, we were not as organized today I would have liked. We are wasting a little too much time moving from station to station as we change periods. Those are precious minutes since we are trying to stay within the two-hour window.

“Also, we did not hit as much today because, right now, repetitions are much more important. To that, we must do a better job as coaches and players of knowing the practice schedule, in terms of where am I now and where will I be next period, so we can get what we need to accomplished.”

The NCAA mandates teams to wear helmets only for two days and then uppers (helmets and shoulder pads) for two days as part of an acclimation process to help avoid heat sickness. While today was the first day with full gear, the practice had toned-down feel. There was limited hitting and no tackling to the ground, what teams call “thud.”

The first item up on the day was special teams as the squad worked on punt block/return then shifted to PAT/field goal. A host of individual drills followed with a period devoted to kickoff return. The final 20 minutes saw the team come together in a scrimmage-type setting.

Alex Ross hit Niccolo Mastromatteo on the first play for a score. Also looking sharp was tailback Lorenzo Taliaferro, while Zach Silverberg made a nice long run on an option play for a score. Defensively, JaDamion Ross and Lorenzo Boyles broke up passes while linebackers Brett Johnson and Colton Blackburn blew up a play on a blitz.
