Chants survive grand slam to knock off UNC Asheville

ccubase-7battingUNC Asheville hit a grand slam in the first inning and scored three runs in the second, but Coastal Carolina (13-18, 5-5 Big South) rallied to hand the Bulldogs (9-21, 3-7) a 9-7 loss Friday night at Greenwood Field.

Coastal did score first and put two runs on the board in the second inning, but was trailing 7-3 through three innings. The Chanticleers tied the game with four runs in the fourth, took an 8-7 lead with a run in the fifth and added an insurance run in the ninth

Chanticleer starter Tyler Herb (5-3) survived the early seven runs to win his fifth straight. He allowed 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in his 6.2 innings with five walks and six strikeouts. After allowing the seventh run to score, Herb ended the second inning by inducing a double play. From that point, he allowed just five hits and pitched six scoreless innings. Andrew Beckwith pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

Connor Owings delivered the key hit for the Chants with a three-run double in the fourth to tie the game, while Michael Paez contributed two hits.

Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Steven Whitaker lined a one-out double to right field and took third on a wild pitch. Zach Remillard followed with an RBI ground out to bring home Whitaker. However, the Bulldogs started the home half of the first inning with a walk, single and walk to load the bases. Pete Guy then cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to make the score 4-1.

Undaunted, the Chanticleers responded with two runs in the second to make the score 4-3. CCU loaded the bases as Colin Hering reached on an error, Paez singled and G.K. Young singled. Nick Oberg lined an RBI single off the shortstop’s glove to plate Hering. Reid Moman lined into a double play. However, on the play, the Bulldogs tried to make a play at second after the double play, allowing Paez to score from third on the throw.

The Bulldogs once again answered with three runs in the home half of the second to take a 7-3 lead. Tanner Bush hit a one out single and Tommy Houmard reached on a fielder’s choice. An error on the fielder’s choice put runners on second and third. Bush later scored on a wild pitch. After a walk to Phillip Treadway, Hunter Bryant had an RBI single but an error on the play allowed Treadway to score from first.

Coastal got back on track in the fourth, loading the bases with a single and two walks. First, Moman was hit by a pitch to bring home Paez. Owings fouled off several pitches before lining a three-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 7-7.

The Chants regained the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring once for an 8-7 lead. Tyler Chadwick hit a leadoff double and scored on back-to-back ground outs, the second being an RBI for Paez.

In the top of the ninth, Coastal loaded the bases with one out. Owings reached on an error, Zach Remillard singled and Chadwick was walked. Hering’s fly ball to left field was deep enough to allow Owings to score and give CCU a 9-7 lead.

The teams will meet for game two of the series on Saturday at 2 pm.
