Chants take on Catamounts in ESPN BracketBuster tilt

The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team travels to Southern Conference member Western Carolina University Saturday as part of the ESPN BracketBusters event. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

The game also marks the final non-conference game of the season for the Chants (13-12, 8-6 BSC), who are trying to make a late push to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Western Carolina (11-17, 8-8 SoCon) have won three of their last five games but are currently riding a two-game losing streak. WCU has played a pair of Big South opponents this season, including opening the season at UNC Asheville and hosting Liberty. The Catamounts went 0-2 in those games.

Western Carolina has just one non-conference Division I win this season, a 69-67 victory over Howard. WCU is led by Trey Sumler who is averaging 18.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Tawaski King is averaging a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game while adding 11.4 points per game.

Coastal Carolina and Western Carolina have met six times on the basketball court with the Chants holds the series lead at 4-2. The Chants have won three-straight against the Catamounts, including their last meeting in 2002. Coastal took down WCU 77-72 on Nov. 22, 2002, in Cullowhee, N.C., to open the 2002-03 season.

Coastal Carolina senior Kierre Greenwood became the winningest four-year player in Coastal Carolina men’s basketball history with CCU’s win over Presbyterian on Feb. 13. Greenwood has now been a part of 88 wins which is the most by any four-year player in Coastal Carolina history. CCU’s record with Greenwood on the roster is 88-37. The previous best four-year stretch was 86-45 from 2008-12.

The Chants have out-rebounded all but five opponents this season. CCU leads the Big South and is 23rd in the NCAA in rebounding margin at +6.2. Coastal has two players ranked in the top-20 in rebounding in the league, seventh-ranked El Hadji Ndieguene and 16th-ranked Michel Enanga.
