Chants tied for second after first round of BSC tourney

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team shot a 3-under 285 Monday to stand in a tie for second after the first round of the 2012 Big South Championships, played at the 7,120-yard, par 72 Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.

Liberty leads the way, shooting an 8-under 280. Coastal is tied with Charleston Southern and the two are four strokes ahead of fourth place Campbell. Liberty’s Chase Marinell leads the field, shooting 5-under 67.

Coastal Carolina senior Charlie Winegardner is in a four-way tie for second. He shot a season-low 69, which is also his lowest round in this his third trip to the Big South Championships. Winegardner was 1-under after nine holes – thanks to a bogey and two birdies, but took a bogey on the par 4 10th. He eagled the par 5 13th and reeled off four pars before posting a birdie on the 18th hole for his round of 69.

Three-time All-Big South selection Sebastian Soderberg and sophomore Roberto Ballesteros, who missed the last three tournaments dating back to early March due to injury, are two strokes behind Winegardner. Soderberg and Ballesteros are tied for eighth after carding a 1-under 71.

Soderberg traded two birdies for two bogeys through seven holes before an eagle on the eighth. He would finish his round with nine pars and a bogey on the the par 4 16th for his 71. After a month and a half off, Ballesteros birdies his first hole and would get to 2-under with a birdie on the par 5 fifth hole. Bogeys on 10, 13 and 16 had Ballesteros at 1-over par before he birdies his last two holes to finish 71.

Freshman Ben Wheeler is tied for 23rd, shooting a 2-over 74. He had pars on his first seven holes before a birdie on eight and bogey on nine. Three bogeys from holes 11-17 had him a 3-over before a birdie on 18 gave Wheeler his 74. Peter Valasekis tied for 28th, shooting a 3-over 75. He led Coastal with four birdies but three bogeys and two double bogeys left the freshman with his 75.

The team will play round two, consisting of 18 holes, Tuesday before concluding on Wednesday with 18 final holes.
