Chants work double duty, beat Rams, Mountaineers

Coastal Carolina scored seven runs in the first inning and pulled away with three in the sixth to defeat VCU, 15-5, in the final game of the Brittain Resorts Invitational at Springs Brooks Stadium. The game, originally scheduled for Monday, was moved to Sunday night due to rain in the forecast, but it didn’t seem to bother the Chants.

The Chanticleers, with a 5-2 win over West Virginia earlier Sunday, improves to 7-2 while VCU drops to 3-5. Coastal will return to action Wednesday by hosting region rival UNC Wilmington at 4 pm before welcoming Ball State, Maryland and Radford next weekend for the Johnny Gardner Law Firm Tournament.

For the Chants in the nightcap, Lee Sponseller was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Kyle Skeels was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Seth Lancaster was 0-for-2 but walked three times and scored three times.

Coastal got off to quick start, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first. Cory Wood hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the first while Kieton Rivers and Lancaster walked to load the bases. Kevin Woodall Jr., also drew a walk to force home Wood while Sponseller delivered a two-run single. Two batters later, Zach Biermann lined an RBI single to center. Keaton Weisz hit a two-run double and Cameron Pearcey capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single.

The Rams used a pair of doubles in the third inning to start a rally. Josh Simon hit he first two-bagger and, two batters later, Haiden Lamb doubled to plate Simon. After a single by Steven Carpenter, Jack Schroeder cleared the bases with a three-run home run to cut the deficit to three, 7-4.

Coastal answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Skeels and Biermann were hit by pitches to begin the home half. Parker Chavers, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, brought home Skeels with a double off the right field fence. Wood grounded out to drive in Biermann and a throwing error allowed Chavers to score as well.

VCU bounced back with a solo home run by Zac Ching to make the score 10-5 in the top of the fourth. However, the Chants once again answered in the home half. Lancaster walked, stole second and scored on Sponseller’s triple. Skeels then dumped a single into right field to bring home Sponseller.

The Chants made is baker’s dozen in the sixth. Lancaster drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by pinch hitter Tor Sehnert. Then Skeels drilled a two-run home run for a 15-5 cushion.

Scott Kobos (1-0) started and got the win. The junior allowed six hits and five run with no walks and three strikeouts.
