BSC wrap up: Buccaneers advance to face CCU Friday

Charleston Southern improved to 13-17 and advances to face No. 1 South seed Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. Friday

Gardner-Webb 81, Longwood 65 – No. 3 South seed Gardner-Webb used a dominant rebounding effort and a balanced scoring attack to defeat No. 6 North seed Longwood, 81-65, in Wednesday evening’s final VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men’s Basketball Championship first round tilt at The HTC Center.

Gardner-Webb (18-14) out rebounded the Lancers by 20 boards (42-22) and put six players in double figures in the scoring column. As a result, the Runnin’ Bulldogs notched their sixth win in the last eight games. They will now face No. 2 North seed VMI in the quarterfinal round Friday at 8 p.m.

Winthrop 77, Liberty 65 – Freshman guard Keon Johnson scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the No. 4 South seed Winthrop Eagles, who finished with a scoring run in the last seven minutes to pull away from No. 5 North seed Liberty for a 77-65 win in a first round game of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men’s Basketball Championship, Wednesday at The HTC Center.

Winthrop improved to 18-12 overall and advances to play No. 1 North seed High Point on Friday at noon.  Liberty, the defending tournament champion, finished at 11-21 overall.  It is the second consecutive year the League’s defending champ was eliminated in the first round.

Radford 77, Presbyterian 73 – Five Radford players scored in double figures and the Highlanders survived a first-round scare from Presbyterian 78-73 Wednesday to advance in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championship at The HTC Center.

Leading the South Division’s sixth seed and upset-minded Blue Hose (6-26) by 15 with 5:45 remaining, the Highlanders (21-11) saw PC trim the gap to just one in the game’s final minute on the heels of a 32-point performance from Jordan Downing.
