Chiefs come back to down Bulldogs in overtime, 20-19

nmbfoot-celebNorth Myrtle Beach finally had the late-game breaks go its way in Friday night’s 20-19 overtime victory over visiting Georgetown, a wild contest that came down to the final play.

Georgetown missed a potential game-winning 2-point conversion after the PAT snap was mishandled, giving the Chiefs (2-5 overall, 1-1 Region 7-3A) a rare win in a season that has seen them lose two games in the waning minutes.

North Myrtle Beach had to work some late magic to pull off this win, beginning with a successful hook-and-ladder that set up the game-tying score. Kendrick Furness made a short pass to Kyle Cooper, who lateraled the ball to Colby Gore. Gore ran deep into Bulldogs’ territory with 20 seconds left and Christian Buis booted a 37-yard field goal with 3 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 13-all and send the game into overtime.

The Chiefs got the ball first and scored on a 1-yard dive by Colin Mitchell. Buis tacked on the PAT in what proved to be the game-winner. But first the Chiefs had to sweat it out. Georgetown scored a 10-yard TD on Michael Billings run on the Bulldogs’ first play of overtime, but the PAT snap bounced and a desperation pass into the end zone was picked off by the Chiefs.

North Myrtle Beach got on the board first behind first-time starting QB Ronnie Bass. His 10-yard TD toss to Maurice Fitch made it 7-0 Chiefs, but Georgetown answered back on Jarvis Brown’s 19-yard TD pass to Marquez Drayton in the second quarter. The PAT was missed, as was a Georgetown field goal attempt before halftime that allowed the Chiefs to carry a 7-6 lead into intermission.

Buis booted a 44-yarder to make it a 10-6 lead in the third period, but he fell just short of making a 47-yarder late in the fourth, giving Georgetown god field position. Brown hooked up with Jaquan Collins, who fought his way into the end zone for a 57-yard TD reception with 1:30 left, and the Chiefs began experiencing a case of deja vu.

North Myrtle Beach coach Blair Hardin made a key call to insert the more experienced Furness, the Chiefs’ regular starter, for the final drive. His hook-and-laddr pass put the Chiefs in the red zone, and this time they delivered in the clutch to get the win.
