Chiefs defeat Seahawks, defend Region 7-4A title

The North Myrtle Beach High wrestling team celebrated Senior Night in the best fashion possible – by clinching the Region 7-4A championship.

The Chiefs defeated rival Myrtle Beach 57-12 to claim back-to-back region titles and home mat advantage for Saturday’s opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs. They will host Stall, Darlington, and Lower Richland on Saturday beginning at noon with only one team advancing to next Monday’s Lower State semifinals.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another,” NMB coach Carl Dukes quoted a favorite biblical verse (Proverbs 27:17). “One match at a time.”

North Myrtle Beach left little doubt in this one, getting a surprisingly strong showing from its lower weights. Normally stronger on the other side of the scale, the Chiefs won all nine of the lower weight divisions while going 2-2 in the heavier weights.

One of those was the match of the night – a showdown between 195-pound state title contenders Curtis Wolfe and Daniel Mitchell. NMB’s Wolfe scored a 2-1 decision in a matchup that could happen again in the individual state tournament. NMB 138-pounder Jackie Gore also battled to a 9-6 decision over Allen Hartell in another thriller.

Myrtle Beach earned the No. 2 seed and will travel Saturday to Chapin. The Seahawks will take on Hilton Head for a chance to face Chapin in the final.
