Chiefs improve to 4-1 with shutout victory over GSF

After snapping a 22-game winning streak to start the season, the North Myrtle Beach football team looked like a solid contender to have a winning regular season.

One month later and it may be time to start thinking about the Chiefs as a serious playoff threat. They improved to 4-1 on Friday night with a 34-0 victory at Green Sea Floyds.

Granted, the Trojans are a step down in competition for the Region VII-AAA schedule that awaits, and the region is when the real push for the postseason begins. But the Chiefs are playing well on both sides of the ball and could be spoilers for those region rivals used to getting a “W” from the Chiefs.

North Myrtle Beach’s defense was a wall from the very start, keeping the Trojans scoreless and in punting situation while the Chiefs offense got rolling. Green Sea Floyds managed only 65 total yards in the contest after allowing Mullins only 105 in last week’s 48-12 victory, while the Chiefs tallied 424 total yards against the Trojans.

The flood gates finally opened in the second period when North Myrtle Beach running back Delonzo Williams fought his way into the end zone from 1 yard out. The Chiefs also got the passing game going and it paid off when quarterback Kendrick Furness hit Kyle Cooper for a 20-yard TD pass for a 14-0 lead.

Rather than run out the clock, the Chiefs tried a Hail Mary and hit the jackpot on a TD connection from Furness to Cameron Gore for a 20-0 halftime lead. Williams scored his second touchdown of the night from 1 yard out and Eric Baker added a 14-yard TD run to give the Chiefs the 34-0 shutout victory.

The Chiefs were able to call off the dogs early in the second half for the second straight week, giving their starters some rest for next week’s region opener against undefeated Socastee. The region schedule will be a major step up in class, but the Chiefs have already shown they have stepped up their game this season.
