Class 3A Playoffs: MB routs Hilton Head; Sharks ousted

mbfoot-22hhThe Myrtle Beach High football team seems to be hitting its stride at just the right time, blowing out Hilton Head Island 63-27 in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs on Friday night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Myrtle Beach running back Brandon Sinclair ran for four touchdowns and 193 yards to surpass the 5,000-yard rushing mark for his career, and fellow senior Drayton Arnold threw four touchdown passes and 220 yards as the Seahawks (9-3) won their seventh straight game. They will play host to No. 1-ranked Hartsville in the Lower State semifinals next Friday night.

The Seahawks took control early in the first half as Arnold connected with Keyonte Sessions for a 30-yard touchdown on the opening series. Following a kickoff return for a touchdown by Hilton Head, Sinclair scored on a 3-yard run as Myrtle Beach led 14-7 less than 3 minutes into the game. It was the first of six unanswered TDs by the Seahawks in the first half.

After Sinclair’s second TD run made it 21-7, Elijah Rice caught a 46-yard touchdown from Arnold, then returned a funny-bouncing punt 26 yards for another score. Arnold hit Cortez Brown and Will Vereen for TD passes to give Myrtle Beach a commanding 49-7 halftime lead. Sinclair added TD runs of 52 and 63 yards in the second half to put the game on ice.

* Midland Valley 56, St. James 21: The Sharks’ first-ever appearance in a second round playoff game was derailed by a couple of Carrs. Midland Valley quarterback Daniel Carr passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and running back Dre’Kwon Carr rushed for two TDs as the Mustangs stampeded past the Sharks (7-5).

St. James quarterback Zach Werba threw a pair of first half touchdowns to keep the Sharks within striking distance with a 28-14 halftime deficit, but Dre’Kwon Carr capped an opening drive with a TD run. Werba made his third TD toss of the game to cut it it 35-21.

But Daniel Carr also hit the passing TD hat trick to double the Sharks up late in the third quarter, then tacked on one more.

St. James concluded its best season in school history, posting its first winning record and winning its first playoff game.
