Coastal adds USC transfer Shaw to recruiting class

uschoops-5The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team will welcome in South Carolina transfer Jaylen Shaw as part of its 2014 recruiting class, head coach Cliff Ellis announced on Friday.

“We are extremely excited Jaylen has decided to join our program at Coastal Carolina University,” said Ellis. “He was one of our most sought after recruits a year ago before signing with South Carolina. He fits the mold for what we look for in a combo guard. After sitting out a year he will be able to step right in and fill the void left by Josh Cameron who will be graduating. Coach (Frank) Martin spoke very highly of Jaylen and said he had the potential to be a great player and wished him luck in the future.”

Shaw, a 6-foot guard for the Gamecocks for one season, will join the Chanticleers as a sophomore. Last season, he appeared in 28 games for the University of South Carolina. He scored 85 points and dished out 30 assists. He shot 41.0 percent from the field including 39.5 percent from 3-point range. He was also an 87.0 percent shooter from the free throw line. He was named the AgSouth Athlete of the Week at USC on Nov. 25 following an 84-72 victory over Florida International. He hit 6-of-10 attempts from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while dishing five assists and adding 16 points in the victory.

Shaw earned back-to-back state championships at Hartsville High School, including in 2013 when he scored 23 points, dished seven assists and collected eight rebounds in the championship game. He was a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com and a two-star prospect by 247sports.com and ESPN.com. He was rated as the No. 8 prospect in the state of South Carolina by ESPN.com as well.
