Coastal coach Moglia adds Robinson Award to resume

ccufoot-mogliaJoe Moglia, who just completed his fourth season at Coastal Carolina, was named recipient of the annual Eddie Robinson Award as the outstanding coach in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), administered by FCS Awards.

“As was the case with Eddie Robinson during his tenure as head coach at Grambling, Joe Moglia extends the learning curve of his athletes beyond the X’s and O’s of the team’s playbook,” said FCS Awards founder Mickey Charles. “Simply stated, while winning was always important (to Coach Robinson), so was life with and without football. Being the honoree this year reflects the same approach by Moglia to football and how one becomes a better person off the field.”

The Eddie Robinson Award is voted upon by FCS coaches and select FCS media members. The Robinson Award itself is given in the name of one of the true legends and admired coaches of decades past.

“We are certainly proud of our program’s success as our mission is to put a team on the field all of the Coastal Carolina community can be proud,” Moglia said. “Likewise, we take very seriously the fact that we have no team rules, but one standard – Be A Man (BAM) where everyone associated with the program stands on their own two feet and accepts responsibility for their actions. That extends to a tremendous commitment to academics and our weekly Life After Football (LAF) meetings.”

Prior to being the recipient this season, Moglia was an Eddie Robinson Award finalist in each of his first three seasons with the Chanticleers, finishing runner up last season. This past season, Coastal Carolina was one of six teams to reach the NCAA Division I Championship each of the last four years. Also, the Chanticleers were ranked #1 in the nation for eight weeks in 2015 and two weeks in 2014. In fact, Coastal Carolina has been ranked among the nation’s top 25 for 44 consecutive polls, among the top five 28 times and among the top 10 in 37 of the last 38 ranking periods with the lone exception of CCU being ranked 11th in the final week of the regular season in 2013.

Moglia is 41-13 in his four years at Coastal with three Big South championships and two conference Coach of the Year honors.

Each of the last two summers, the CCU football program has won the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic Progress Rate (APR) Award for achieving the highest single-year APR among Big South Conference football programs. A total of six players have earned their Master’s degrees during Moglia’s four years with an additional four set to complete their graduate degrees within the year. Also, over Moglia’s four-year tenure, of a possible 79 players, a total of 65 football student-athletes have graduated with 10 more scheduled to graduate within the year.
