Coastal finishes in middle of the pack at LSU tournament

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team shot a final round 300 to remain in sixth place at the 12-team David Toms Intercollegiate, hosted by LSU at the par-72, 7,663-yard University Club. Overall, Coastal turned in rounds of 294-298-300 for a 54-hole total of 892.

Southeastern Louisiana, the leader after rounds one and two, won the event with a 4-under par 860. Iowa State, which was tied for sixth with CCU after two rounds, fired a 4-under 284 Sunday – the best round by six strokes – to vault into second place. Kennesaw State, Louisiana and Houston rounded out the top five.

Junior Ben Wheeler recorded his seventh career top 10 finish by tying for seventh. After rounds of 71-73 Saturday, Wheeler carded a final-round 73 for a 54-hole total of 1-over 217. His 1-under scoring on the par 4’s was fourth-best in the field He started slow, with bogeys on two of his first five holes, but was 3-under over his next eight holes to get to 1-under par through 13 holes. He posted back-to-back bogeys before reeling off three pars to end his round.

Andrew Dorn tallied his seventh career top 20 finish by tying for 13th. After a pair of 71’s Saturday, the junior posted a 77 Sunday to finish with a 3-over 219 over 54 holes. His 5-under scoring on the par 5’s was second-best in the field and his 11 birdies was the sixth-best total.

Freshman Christopher Williams tied for 30th with an 8-over par 224 (74-75-75). He dominated the par five, 17th hole, posting two birdies and an eagle. In fact, his eagle Saturday was one of just five for the three-round event. Also, Williams’ 36 pars over 54 holes tied for ninth-best in the field.

Peter Valasek and Josh Pisarri rounded out Coastal’s contingent. Valasek tied for 59th (78-80-75=233) and Pisarri tied for 65th (79-79-78=236).

Coastal Carolina will return to action later this week (Oct. 11-13) at East Tennessee State’s annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
