Coastal finishes middle of the pack at ETSU tourney

ccugolf-dorn3Andrew Dorn tied for sixth and led Coastal Carolina to an eighth place finish at the ETSU/Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.

The event was shortened to two rounds as the final round was cancelled Sunday due to rain at the par 72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Course at The Ridges.

The Chanticleers (286-292=578) were tied for eighth at the conclusion of play Saturday. However, six teams did not complete their round. Those six finished their second round early Sunday, which allowed CCU to finish in eighth alone, before the final round was cancelled.

Wake Forest won the 15-team event by carding an 18-under par score of 558 (280-278). Host East Tennessee State was second (281-282=563/-13), followed by Penn State (291-278=569/-7), Virginia Tech (290-283=573/-3) and Memphis (295-279=574/-2). Coastal was third after round one, shooting a 2-under par 286, before carding a 292 on day two for a 36-hole total of 2-over par 578.

Dorn, playing in his 35th career event, posted his 10th career top 10 finish, turning in a 4-under par 140. The senior shot an opening-round 69 – his sixth career round in the 60’s – and posted a 1-under par 71 on Saturday giving him 31 career rounds of par or better, including 17 of his last 37 rounds.

Ben Wheeler, who shot a 1-over par 145 (72-73), tied for 30th. The senior had six birdies for his opening-round 72. On day two, he turned in 16 pars, adding a birdie and a double bogey, for his 73. Sophomore transfer Ryan Carpenter was one stroke of Wheeler’s pace, shooting 146 (73-73) and tied for 35th.

Josh Pisarri had his best outing. The sophomore, making his fourth career appearance, had an opening-round even-par 72, followed by a 3-over 75 on Saturday. He tied for 40th with his 3-over score of 147. Olle Widegren tied for 71st (74-79=153).

The Chanticleers will return to action this coming weekend, playing in the USC Camden Intercollegiate Oct. 18-19 at the Palmetto Golf Club.
