Coastal tops Georgia Tech, shuts out Albany in twinbill

ccubase-morrisonpitchCasey Schroeder hit a three-run home run and Tyler Chadwick added a two-run shot as part of a seven-run fifth inning to lead Coastal Carolina to a 7-5 victory over #28 Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium as part of the 16th Annual Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Chase Adkins pitched seven scoreless innings with one walk and a career-high six strikeouts to lead Coastal Carolina to a 12-0 win over Albany.

In the first game, pitcher Alex Cunningham (2-0) continued his comeback by striking out a career-high six batters in 5-plus innings of work. The redshirt sophomore allowed five hits and four runs while walking one. Mike Morrison entered the game with one out and a runner on second and CCU hanging on to a two-run lead. The junior struck out two batters to escape the seventh then had three-up, three-down innings in the eighth and ninth to earn his second save.

After scoring eight runs in the top of the ninth versus Florida International in game one Saturday, Georgia Tech picked up where it left off as Kel Johnson hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets added a run in the top of the fifth. Connor Justus drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Coastal Carolina answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dalton Ewing walked to start the home half and CCU put runners on first and second thanks to a Georgia Tech error.  Anthony Marks loaded the bases with a bunt single. Zach Remillard was hit by a pitch to force home Ewing and keep the bases loaded. Connor Owings plated Michael Paez with a sacrifice fly and Schroeder cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field. G.K. Young singled and Chadwick followed with a two-run home run just inside the right field foul pole for his first home run of the season.

Georgia Tech go two of those runs bask in the top of the sixth. Thomas Smith and Kel Johnson had back-to-back singles to chase CCU starter Alex Cunningham. A.J. Murray walked to load the bases. After a line out, Justus walked to force home Smith. Two batters later, Brandon Gold provided an RBI single to plate Johnson.

The Jackets trimmed their deficit to two, 7-5, by scoring a run in the seventh. Daniel Spagnola and Smith hit leadoff singles. After a passed ball, Johnson drove in Spagnola with an RBI groundout to third base.
