Coastal golfers post top 10 finish in Augusta tournament

Coastal Carolina turned in its second-best, 54-hole score of the season (861) and tied for 10th in one of the nation’s top events, the Insperity-Augusta State Invitational played at the par-72, 7,143-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.

The Chanticleers, who shot a season-best 860 in their last outing at Furman, carded rounds of 287-284-290 for a 3-under par 861.

The 16-team field featured 10- team ranked among the nation’s top 50, including top-ranked Texas and two-time defending NCAA champion Augusta State. The Longhorns and Jaguars tied after three rounds at 26-under 838 with Texas winning in a playoff.

Coastal was led by Charlie Winegardner. The senior carded a one-under 71, backing up his two rounds of 70 Saturday. Winegardner has now turned in five straight rounds of par or better. On Sunday, he bogeyed two of his first five holes before getting a birdie on the par 5 sixth. He would reel off six straight pars before birdies on 13 and 17 to record his 1-under 71. For the 54 holes, he shot 5-under 211 to tie for 14th. The finish was his best in a 54-hole event since placing eighth at the 2010 Big South Championship and his 211 is a career-best effort by five strokes.

Freshman Ben Wheeler also had his best effort of the season, tying for 18th. Wheeler, who shot a 66 in round two Saturday, turned in a 71 Sunday for a three-round score of 4-under 212. On Sunday, Wheeler made the turn at 1-under thanks to a birdie on the par 4 third. He had two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot his 71.

Sebastian Soderberg tied for 48th with a 3-over 219. The junior only had one par through 10 holes in the final round, getting six bogeys and three birdies. After a bogey on the par 3 16th hole, Soderberg ended his round with a birdie on 18 for his 75.

Peter Valasek tied for 59th, shooting 5-over 221 for the event. After a pair of 74’s Saturday, the freshman shot 73 Sunday. He made the turn at 3-over, thanks to six pars and three bogeys, but had birdies on 10 and 12 with seven pars on the back nine to finish 1-over par on the day.

Fellow freshman Andrew Dorn tied for 66th, carding a season-best, 54-hole score of 224. He was a combined 4-over after 36 holes and was 4-over (76) Sunday offsetting a birdie and double bogey with three bogies.

Coastal Carolina will conclude the regular season April 16-18 at the 2012 Big South Championships.
