Coastal holds first football scrimmage of fall season

ccufoot-4smallThe Coastal Carolina football team held its first contact scrimmage of the 2015 fall camp Saturday morning at Brooks Stadium. Overall, the team scrimmaged for an hour with the first offense facing the first defense and second offense facing the second defense for the majority of the scrimmage.

Following segments of stretching and warmups, the scrimmage portion got underway with the punt and punt return teams on the field. The highlight of the punting segment was Devin Brown’s 30-yard return that featured the shiftiness that earned him Freshman All-American honors in 2013.

The first offense vs. defense segment was situational as the offense started on its own two yard line with the sole purpose of getting one first down. The offense moved the chains twice in its four tries, including a 20-yard Michael Church to Kyle Wilson connection on first down.

The second part of the scrimmage had the offense taking the ball on the defense’s 35 yard line. The first offense converted a quick first down then, on 3rd-and-2, Alex Ross found Brown in the space voided by the linebackers for a 22-yard touchdown.

Church led the second unit to a first down, but ultimately had to settle for a 46-yard Ryan Granger field goal.

Ross then led the first offense down to the two-yard line, but the first unit defense held firm and forced a 22-yard Granger field goal. Tyler Keane then took over the second team offense. A pair of runs set up a 3rd-and-4 for the offense, but Clark Krimmer halted the series with a sack of Keane.

The final portion of the scrimmage featured the offenses starting at the 50-yard line for full drives. De’Angelo Henderson picked up a first down, but the drive stalled with a fumble on 3rd-and-1 three plays later. The second unit was led by Josh Stilley and also gained a first down before Eric Church ended the drive with an interception at the 27-yard line.

The first team defense then forced a three-and-out, including a pass break-up at the line of scrimmage by Marcus Williamson. The second defensive unit followed suit and stifled the Keene-led offense on the ensuing drive.

The final drive of the day featured a Chance Thrasher-led offense that drove the ball from the 50-yard line to a 3rd-and-goal situation before stalling. Thrasher completed three of seven passes for 24 yards and rushed for 21.

Big plays made on the defensive side of the ball included: Krimmer’s sack; a blocked field goal by Austin Murillo; a pass break-up by Devon Brant; tackles for losses by Williamson, interception by Eric Church.
