Coastal holds No. 1 ranking; more honors for Henderson

ccufoot-31With an impressive 41-14 win in week two of the 2015 season, the Coastal Carolina football team remained #1 in the FCS Coaches poll and moved up one spot to #2 in the STATS FCS top 25 national media poll.

The Chanticleers will defend their lofty rank when they host Western Illinois, ranked 31st in the STATS FCS poll, this Saturday (Sept. 19) for Coastal Carolina’s home opener. Kickoff is set for 6 pm. The Chants have won each of their last four home openers and are 9-3 all-time when playing their first home game of the season.

Fans can talk about the big win at South Carolina State, the national polls and the home opener tonight during the Joe Moglia Radio Show with co-host Joe Cashion. Fans are encouraged to interact with Coach Moglia during the live broadcast from 6-7 pm at Buffalo Wild Wings in Carolina Forest. The top of the FCS Coaches poll features Coastal Carolina, followed by North Dakota State and Villanova. Jacksonville State, ranked #1 in the STATS FCS top 25, moved up two spots to fourth by the coaches while Sam Houston State rounds out the top five. Liberty fell one spot to 14. Other CCU opponents that received votes this week include South Carolina State, Charleston Southern and Western Illinois.

For the second consecutive week, Coastal Carolina junior running back De’Angelo Henderson (Summerville/Summerville HS) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Offensive Player of the Week after the No.1-ranked Chanticleers’ 41-14 victory at South Carolina State.

Henderson, who was additionally honorable mention FCS Football National Player of the Week, rushed for 136 yards with a touchdown to become Coastal Carolina’s all-time leading rusher. He also posted posting his 11th career 100-yard game, scored at least one rushing TD in his 16th consecutive game. He averaged 5.7 yards on his 24 rushing attempts and he caught five passes for 44 yards for 180 all-purpose yards in the win.  He posted five plays of 10 yards or more (three rushes, two receptions) and was responsible for 11 first downs (nine rush, two receiving).
