Coastal in middle of pack as Dorn, Wheeler in medal mix

ccugolf-dornsmallCoastal Carolina seniors Ben Wheeler and Andrew Dorn are among the top six after 36 holes at the annual Sea Best Invitational, played at the par 70, 6,873-yard Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.

The duo joined the team late Sunday after playing in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational, one of the top amateur events in the world, this past weekend. Wheeler is tied for second with a two-round score of 142 – three shots off the lead with 18 holes remaining Tuesday – while Dorn is tied for sixth with a 36-hole score of 144.

The Chanticleers are in eighth as a team. Coastal was in third after a first round 295, but tough weather conditions in the afternoon session led to a 309 and a 36-hole score of 604. Fifteenth-ranked North Carolina leads the 15-team field with a score of 584 (288-296), followed by #3 Florida State (587), Florida (588), #28 North Florida (592), McNeese State (594) and #30 UNLV (594).

Wheeler had five birdies and five bogeys in the morning session and was in sixth with an opening-round 70. His afternoon score of 2-over 72, again in difficult weather conditions, was good enough to move up four spots into a tie for second with North Carolina’s Ben Griffin (68-74), who is ranked #27 in the nation.

Dorn started the day with a birdie on his opening hol3 – #16 – and followed that with a birdie on 17. He added two more birdies and three bogies for his 1-under 69 to stand in second after the opening round. He also birdied the par-5, 16th to open his second round and finished with a 5-over par 75 to finish 36 holes in a tie for sixth along with #17 Rowin Caron (Florida State), #46 Tomasz Anderson (Jacksonville State), #54 Jack Maguire (Florida State) and #96 Joey Peronio (North Florida).

Josh Pisarri is tied for 64th (77-80=157), Olle Widegren is tied for 74th (79-82=161) and Ryan Carpenter is in 76th (80-83=163).

The Sea Best Invitational will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
