Coastal lands seven on Big South’s All-Decade Teams

ccuhoops-leasureA total of seven former Coastal Carolina University student-athletes were selected to the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball All-Decade Teams, the conference announced on Wednesday. Part of the Big South’s 30th anniversary celebration, the all-decade teams were determined by conference administrators and fan voting.

Two Chanticleers were tabbed for the All-Decade Team covering 1985-89, two from 1990-99 and three were named to the 2000-09 team. CCU had the most selections of any program. Charleston Southern, Campbell and Winthrop were tied for second with four selections, though Charleston Southern and Winthrop each added a coach to bring their total number to five.

The 1985-89 selections were three-time All-Conference pick William Calvin and two-time All-Conference choice Derek Wilson. Calvin’s 706 career rebounds rank him 20th in the Big South annals while his 8.94 career rebounding average is third. Wilson was named 1987-88 Big South Player of the Year and his 712 career rebounds rank him 19th overall in the Big South annals.

Four-time Player of the Year selection and Big South Hall of Fame member Tony Dunkin led the way for the 1990-99 selections. Fellow Big South Hall of Fame member and two-time All-Conference selection Robert Dowdell joined Dunkin on the list. Dunkin’s 2,151 career points rank third in Big South history while his 725 rebounds are 16th. Dowdell ranks sixth on the all-time Big South list with 561 assists and seventh with 239 steals.

A trio of All-Americans highlight the Chanticleers’ 2000-09 selections. Two-time All-American and two-time Player of the Year Torrey Butler leads the way. All-American, Player of the Year and three-time All-Conference selection Jack Leasure was also selected along with All-American, Player of the Year and two-time All-Conference selection Pele Paelay. Butler ranks seventh in the Coastal Carolina record book for points in a career with 1,467. Leasure’s 1,893 points rank 11th in the Big South annals and second at Coastal Carolina. Leasure also holds the Big South record for career three-pointers with 411. Paelay ranks 14th in the Coastal Carolina record book with his 1,178 career points.
