Coastal moves up in polls; Owings earns weekly honor

ccubase-owingsCoastal Carolina senior outfielder Connor Owings (Gilbert, S.C.) has been named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for games played April 11-17, it was announced today by the Conference office.

Owings posted multi-hit performances in three of Coastal’s four games last week, as he concluded the stretch 7-for-15 (.467) with five runs scored and four RBI. The senior hit a solo home run in every game of a home sweep of Presbyterian College over the weekend. With the performance at the plate, he closed last week with a 1.133 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage.

Owings is riding a 16-game hit streak – raising his average from .304 to .392 – and is batting .500 (28-for-56) over the span with 18 runs scored, 16 RBI, a double, triple and five HR with seven walks while going 5-of-6 in stolen bases. During his streak, he has 10 multi-hit games and reached base in seven consecutive at bats (6 hits and 1 walk) spanning the South Carolina game and Radford opener.

In addition to his 16-game hit streak, Owing is batting .455 (36-for-79) over his last 23 games and he has reached base safely (hit, walk, hit by pitch) in 32 of 37 games this season.

Owings play of late has helped the Chanticleers win seven straight, go 10-1 in April, win 14 of their last 15 and post a 22-5 record over their last 25 games.

Only Texas Tech (9 games) and UNC Wilmington (8 game) have a better current winning streak than Coastal’s seven. Also, with a 10-1 record in April, only Texas Tech and its 12-1 ledger this month has a better scoresheet than Coastal Carolina. (Note: Miami (Fla.) also has a 10-1 record in April while Kennesaw State and Texas A&M also have a seven-game winning streak.)

Coastal Carolina (27-10) has moved up in all the polls, reaching as a high as #16 in the PerfectGame.org top 25. CCU is additionally 18th in the Collegiate Baseball top 30, 21st in the D1Baseball.com top 25, 25th in the Baseball America top 25 and 28th in the National College Baseball Writers Association top 30. CCU is just outside the USA Today/Coaches poll, standing as the first team out of the top 25.

The Chanticleers will travel to North Carolina on Tuesday for an ESPN3 matchup. First pitch is set for 6 pm. The Tar Heels are a consensus top 25 team, ranking as high as 13th and no lower than 21st.

Coastal will return home Wednesday to face region rival College of Charleston, with first pitch set for 6 pm, before hosting High Point for a weekend series. The Panthers are second to CCU in the Big South standings.
