Coastal nets back-to-back Big South championships

ccutennis-teamThe Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team ensured itself a second consecutive Big South regular season championship on Sunday with a 6-1 win at Winthrop.

Coastal (17-3) remains undefeated through seven conference matches. The Chants can clinch the regular season championship outright with a win in their final match against Liberty on Wednesday, or a loss by Presbyterian (11-13, 5-1) in one of its last two conference matches this week. Coastal owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over PC, ensuring CCU the top seed in the Big South tournament for the second straight year, third time in the past four years and fifth time in program history.

Sunday’s win additionally gives the 2016 Chants the program record for most wins in a season with 17.

“All the credit goes to our guys. They all bought into the team and fought in each and every match,” said Chanticleer coach Chris Powers. “We will certainly enjoy this win, and turn our attention to Liberty and senior day on Wednesday after a well-deserved day off.”

Coastal fell behind early after Winthrop took the doubles point, but stormed back in singles to take all six courts.

Jabor Al-Mutawa (No. 2), Pedro Leme (No. 3) and Rick Timmerman (No. 5) won their respective singles matches in straight sets.

Vuk Velickovic (No. 1), Sebastian Schneider (No. 4) and Luiz Faria (No. 6) won the remaining matches in three sets.

The Chants close out the regular season schedule on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. match against Liberty at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex. Prior to the match Coastal will recognize its four seniors, Leme, Timmerman, Nic Planchard and Stefan Jakubov.
