Coastal packs golf bags for Baton Rouge NCAA regional

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team will play at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional at the University Club on the campus of Louisiana State University, the 2013 Big South Championship learned Monday night watching the NCAA selection show at Adkins Field House.

Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 16-18. There will be 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams competing at each of three regionals, while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The finals will be conducted May 28-June 2, at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Tech is the host institution for this year’s championships.

“We are excited,” said Director of Golf Allen Terrell. “The play-ability of the course will be similar to the courses we play here since our course here in the area and Baton Rouge are both at sea level. The course are a bit different since the fairways are not lined with trees like they are here, so that will be the biggest adjustment we will need to make during our practice round.”

Alabama, one of the nation’s top-ranked teams all season featuring three players ranked among the nation’s top 10, is the top seed at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. Completing the field is Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, Houston, Tennessee, Northwestern, South Alabama, UAB, Wichita State, Southeastern Louisiana and Houston Baptist.

Coastal Carolina faced Tennessee seven times this year, including CCU’s own General Hackler Invitational, as well as playing against Florida, LSU, Mississippi State and Houston during the season.

“The great thing about golf is everyone is starting from the same point this time of the season and you are competing against the course as much as you are specific teams,” Terrell said. “Sebastian Soderberg is a seasoned veteran, making his fourth NCAA postseason appearance, and he knows what it takes to advance. The rest of the team is playing well too so I like our chances. We have faced most of the nation’s top teams this year to prepare ourselves for the NCAA postseason so we will are entering this with the mindset of having just as good a chance to advance as any other team.”

Soderberg is the 2013 Big South Player of the Year and became just the third Chanticleer to become a four-time All-Big South selection. Soderberg additionally is a three-time Academic All-Big South honoree.  As a sophomore, Soderberg advanced to the NCAA Championship as he placed second at the NCAA East-Virginia Tech Regional with a 4-under 212. Although the Chanticleers did not make the NCAA field last spring, Soderberg qualified as an individual, placed 14th and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship.

Joining Soderberg at the NCAA Regional will be 2013 All-Big South honoree Andrew Dorn, Roberto Ballesteros, Andrew Wheeler and peter Valasek. Ballesteros is the only other Chanticleer to have played in the NCAA postseason, making as appearance with the team at the 2011 NCAA East-Virginia Tech Regional.
