Coastal comes from behind in eighth to beat Trojans

ccubase-Jordan Gore vs Troy Sat 1Down 4-3 in the eighth inning, Coastal Carolina junior Seth Lancaster lined a two-out, two-run single to lift the Chanticleers to a 5-4 victory over Troy Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.

In the decisive eighth, Wood Myers walked, Kieton Rivers was hit by a pitch and Peyton Isaacson walked to load the bases with one out. After an out, Lancaster came through, hitting a 3-2 pitch to right field to bring home Myers and Rivers for the tying and winning runs.

Bobby Holmes (4-3) got a ground out, pop out and strikeout in the ninth to close out the win. Overall, Holmes pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three of the seven batters he faced.

Overall Lancaster accounted for four of CCU’s five runs scoring twice in addition his two RBI. Jordan Gore drove in two as well and Billy Cooke was 3-for-4 after not reaching base for just the third time in 2017 last night.

Coastal Carolina turned a leadoff walk in the third into a run to take a 1-0 lead. Lancaster walked, moved to second on a Matt Beaird sacrifice bunt, took third on a Cooke single and scored on a Gore safety squeeze bunt.

The Trojans tied the game in the fifth thanks to a CCU error. Chase Smartt started the frame with a leadoff single. Jackson Cofer laid down a sacrifice bunt but a throwing error allowed Smartt to  advance to third. Drew Cofer lined an RBI single to centerfield to score Smartt and knot the game, 1-1.k

The Chants answered with two runs in the home half of the fifth. Lancaster once again walked and scored, this time on an RBI triple to centerfield by Beaird. Two batters later, Gore delivered an RBI single to right field to plate Beaird.

Troy bounced back with a run in the sixth. Brandon Lockridge was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third on a single to right. Mason Rogers reached on an error, which allowed Lockridge to score.

In the seventh, the Trojans took advantage of CCU’s fifth error of the game to score twice and take a 4-3 lead. Steven Whitaker reached on a one-out error and moved to third on a single by Matt Sanders, who later stole second. Then, with two outs, Trevor Davis hit a single to bring home both Whitaker and Sanders.

Andrew Beckwith pitched well, but did not figure in the decision. He allowed six hits and four runs (one earned), with no walks and four strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

Marc Skinner (3-4) took the loss as he allowed two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings.

Coastal (26-16-1, 12-7-1 Sun Belt) and Troy (24-18, 10-10) will play the runner match of the series on Sunday at 1 pm.
