Coastal rallies in the rain to down Charleston Southern

ccubase-paez2Michael Paez was 3-for-4 and Tyler Herb won his fourth straight on the mound as Coastal Carolina rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 7-3 victory versus Charleston Southern on a drizzly Friday at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Chanticleers (11-15, 3-4 Big South) and Buccaneers (15-13, 1-6 Big South) dodged rain throughout the contest, but field conditions stayed good enough to finish the contest.

Herb (4-3) tossed his second complete game and Coastal’s first since he accomplished the feat versus Manhattan in the 2012 NCAA Columbia Regional. He scattered 10 hits, allowing three runs (two earned) and three walks, with four strikeouts – two coming in the ninth inning. After allowing three runs in the second, Herb settled down to pitch seven shutout innings the rest of the way. During his four-game win streak, he has allowed just four runs in 29.1 innings. However, he faced some adversity in the ninth inning as CSU loaded the bases before Herb struck out pinch hitter Matt Witt to end the contest.

Charleston Southern grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, snapping Herb’s scoreless inning streak at 21.1 innings. Chase Shelton and Nick Berry each had singles to start the frame and Andrew Widell followed with a walk to load the bases. A passed ball allowed the first run to score before Zack Hagaman delivered a sacrifice fly and Sam Remick hit an RBI single.

In the third inning, CSU’s Alex Tomasovich singled to extend his nation’s best active hit streak to 21 games. He looked to add to the Buccaneer lead, but was thrown out at home by left fielder Kyle Jackson.

Two innings later, Coastal threw out a second Buccaneer at the plate. Nate Blanchard hit a two-out double and Bobby Ison followed with a bloop single to center. Blanchard tried to score on the play but Steven Whitaker threw a strike to home to record the final out.

Coastal Carolina rode that momentum to trim its deficit to one, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Whitaker walked and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Paez lined an RBI double down the left field line to plate Whitaker. Paez then stole third and scored on a balk.

In the home half of the sixth inning, Coastal Carolina took its first lead after scoring three runs in the frame. With the bases loaded and one out. Colin Hering lined a 2-2 pitch down the right field line to score Connor Owings and Zach Remillard. Then, with runners on second and third, Nick Oberg’s ground out to second was good enough to bring home Jackson for a 5-3 lead.

The Chants added a run in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. Paez singled and would get to third on a Connor Owings single. With runners on the corners, Owings took off for second and, when the throw was made to second, Paez sprinted home and beat the throw from the CSU shortstop.

With two outs in the eighth, Whitaker singled and Paez was hit by a pitch. Facing a full count, Tyler Chadwick lined an RBI single to right to provide the eventual 7-3 final.

Tory Schoff (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings.

The teams are schedule to meet Saturday at 3 pm in game two of the series.
