Coastal splits doubleheader with Pitt to drop first series

ccubase-poolePittsburgh (2-1) scored three runs in the fifth inning, three in the seventh and held on for a 10-6 victory in game one of a Sunday doubleheader.

In game two, Chanticleer sophomore Tyler Chadwick was 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Coastal (1-2) to an 8-5, seven-inning win at Pelicans Ballpark.

Coastal Carolina will return to action Thursday at 4 pm, hosting George Mason in the first game of the 16th Annual Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach. Coastal will play Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the event which features Illinois, Wichita State and Connecticut.

Pittsburgh jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one thanks to a pair of hits and two wild pitches. With one out in the first inning, Boo Vazquez reached on a single and took third on a wild pitch. Casey Roche followed by striking out, but a wild pitch allowed Roche to reach first and Vazquez to score. After Roche stole second, Jordan Frabasilio reached on an infield single. However, a throwing error on the play allowed Roche to score.

Coastal answered back in the bottom of the first. With one out, Michael Paez singled, advanced to third on a Colin Hering single and scored on an error on the play. Zach Remillard followed with an RBI double to knot the game at 2-2.

The Chants took their first lead of the series in the fourth. Richard Carter drew a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt and single by Holden Cammack moved Carter to third. Nick Oberg laid down a safety squeeze to drive in Carter and give CCU a 3-2 advantage.

Pitt loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth thanks to a single, walk and error. Stephen Vranka tied the game with an RBI walk to tie the game. Vazquez followed with a two-run single for a 5-3 lead. The Panthers added a run in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two out, CCU looked to get out of a jam on a Vazquez ground ball, but the Chanticleer first baseman was ruled off the base to allow Eric Hess to score.

The Panthers added three runs in the seventh. After loading the bases on a hit batter, error and intentional walk, Manny Pazos had an RBI ground out and Dylan Wolsonovich followed with a two-run double. Roche opened the eighth with a solo home run to left field for a 0-3 cushion.

As it did in game one Saturday, Coastal put together a rally, scoring three times and having the tying run on deck before Pitt relief pitcher Andrew Belfiglio recorded a pop put, strikeout and fly out to end the game.

Pitt relief pitcher Hobie Harris (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching 4.1 innings. Coastal starter Tyler Herb (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed three hits and four walks over 4.0 innings.

Pittsburgh drew first blood in game two as well. In the second inning, Steven Shelinsky Jr., and Frabasilio had back-to-back singles and, after a sac bunt, Eric Hess hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Shelinsky.

Coastal got on the scoreboard with four runs in the third. With two out and two on, Coastal had four consecutive RBI singles by Remillard, G.K. Young, Chadwick and Carter to chase Panther starter TJ Zeuch.

The Panthers took advantage of three CCU errors in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Matt Johnson started the frame by reaching on an error and scored three batters later when Wolsonovich reached on an error. With the bases loaded, Vazquez lined a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4. With runners on first and second and one out, Coastal could only get one out on a ground ball to second, leaving runners on the corners. A throwing error allowed Vranka to score from third for a one-run lead.

Coastal regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hering was hit by a pitch to start the home half and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Young delivered an RBI single and, after a Chadwick single but runners on the corners, pinch runner Reid Mathews scored on a Richard Carter bunt single.

The Chants pushed their advantage to 8-5 after scoring two runs in the sixth. With the bases and two outs, Chadwick lined a two-run single to right field.

New Chanticleer closer Tyler Poole retired the Panthers in order in the seventh, with two strikeouts, to earn his first career save. Sophomore Mike Morrison (1-0) did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings to pick up his first career win. Adam Dian (0-1) suffered the loss for Pitt, allowing four hits and two runs in an inning’s work.
