Chants take time out from football to vote in election

ccufoot-voteWhile college football teams across the country will spend Tuesday practicing for an upcoming game, the Coastal Carolina University football players will be practicing a Constitutional right in a more important contest.

Coastal Carolina coach Joe Moglia and his 15th-ranked Chanticleers are taking time out of their hectic schedules to vote Tuesday. As part of their “Life After Football” program, Coastal will join the nation’s military academies in having every member of the  team cast a ballot for this year’s presidential election.

“The election is the biggest thing going on in the world Tuesday,” said Moglia. “Aside from the service academies, Coastal Carolina will be the only team in the nation to have every member of its team vote in this year’s election. We assisted players who needed to vote by absentee ballot to make sure they got that done on time, and all the other players will vote Tuesday.

“Even though some players have voted early, they will go to the polls Tuesday just to support their teammates. The right to vote is one of the cornerstones of this great democracy and is a privilege no one should take for granted.”

The election has been more than a one-day event for the Chanticleers. The team has spent time debating the issues, at least when they’re not butting heads on the practice field.

“Each Thursday, we use 30 minutes of our NCAA-allotted, 20-hour practice allotment to devote time to our ‘Life After Football’ program,” Moglia said. “We discuss wide-ranging topics during LAF, encompassing issues not related to football our players will or might face, as well as hot-button topics going on in the world.

“This most recent program had two interns research the platforms of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. They held a mini debate and took questions from the team. The questions our players asked were great, and that is something I am very, very proud of. The session was only supposed to be about 30 minutes, but I had to cap it at an hour because we did have practice.”

Coastal is preparing to return to action Saturday, hosting Bryant at 2 pm for a CCU Hall of Fame weekend.
