Coastal tied for third through first round of ETSU tourney

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team carded a 3-under par 285 and is tied for third after the first round of 14-team ETSU Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Course at The Ridges.

Host East Tennessee State leads after posting an 11-under par 277 and is followed by #13 Virginia Tech, which shot a 4-under 284. Coastal is tied for third with #17 Kent State and the two are two shots clear of #26 Memphis and UNC Wilmington, each shooting an even par 288 and tying for fifth.

CCU freshman Olle Widegren is among three players tied for sixth, shooting a 3-under par 69. He is three shots off the lead as ETSU’s Rhys Pugh turned in a first-round 66. Widegren, opened with a birdie, but promptly bogeyed. After a par on the par-3 sixth hole, Widegren birdied the par-5 fourth and reeled off five straight pars to finish 1-under at the turn. He then birdied three of his first five holes on the inward nine, getting to 4-under, before suffering a bogey on the par-4 15th. He finished with three pars for his round of 69.

Ben Wheeler is one shot off Widegren’s pace, shooting a 2-under par 70. The junior is tied for ninth with six other golfers. Wheeler had four birdies and five pars on the front nine and remained at 4-under par through five holes on the back nine before bogeys on holes 15 and 17 forced him to settle for his 70.

Fellow junior Andrew Dorn finished day one with a 1-under par 71 and is one of eight tied for 15th. Dorn, like Wheeler, had an impressive front nine with three birdies and six pars. He posted a bogey on the par-3 12th hole, but bounced back to 3-under par for the day with a birdie on the par-5 14th. However, Dorn ended the day with back-to-back bogeys for his 71.

Freshman Chris Williams finished day one with a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 53rd, while Peter Valasek carded a 4-over 76 to tie for 56th.
