Coastal women finish 14th at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

Coastal Carolina women’s golf team fired a 314 on the second round of the weather-shortened Darius Rucker Intercollegiate to finish 14th overall as it carded a 36-hole total of 621.  The event was originally scheduled for 54-holes, but was shorted to 36-holes due to inclement weather and team travel arrangements.

The field, featuring 12 top 50 teams in the nation, of which four entered the event ranked among the nation’s top 10, was led by champion Alabama (288-283=571). The second-ranked Crimson Tide defeated 10th-ranked North Carolina by 11 strokes and fifth-ranked Vanderbilt by 22.

For the first time this season, Jessica Alexander led the Chanticleer contingent, tying for 27th. She carded rounds of 73-78 for a total of 9-over par 151. The junior did post three birdies over the two days, on the par-71 course that finished with a 77.12 scoring average.  Alexander closed her second round Sunday morning with a bogey and a double. However, she did shoot par on 14 holes.

Brittany Henderson opened the event with a 7-over 78. She bounced back in the second round with one of only eight birdies on the par-5 509-yard third hole and would post a team-best 5-over 76 despite the soggy conditions. The junior tied for 38th with a 36-hole total of 154.

Senior Kaitlin Higginbotham equaled Henderson to tie for 38th, carding rounds of 74-80 for a total of 154. She had no birdies, but managed 10 pars in her second round for an 80.

Frida Castillo and Courtney Boe rounded the Chanticleers scorers. Castillo shot rounds of 82-80, while Boe turned in rounds of 82-94. Castillo finished the second round with a Coastal-best three birdies. Boe finished her round paring three of her final four holes.

Up next for Coastal Carolina is the annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational hosted by Hawai’i, March 13-14, at the Kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course. The Chants will then stay out west and compete in the San Diego State hosted Battle at Rancho Bernardo.
