Coastal’s Al-Mutawa to face No. 1 Djokovic in Qatar Open

ccuten-jaborJabor Al-Mutawa of the Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team has qualified to compete in the Qatar ExxonMobile Open, where he will face a Serbian doubles pair that features Novak Djokovic, currently ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

The Qatar Open, one of the first events of the 2015 ATP World Tour, will also feature such notable tennis greats as Rafael Nadal (world No. 3), Tomas Berdych (world No. 7) and David Ferrer (world No. 10).

Al-Mutawa will be playing in the doubles draw with Malek Jaziri of Tunisia. The pair will face Djokovic and his partner Filip Krajinovic in the first round of the draw on Monday. It will be the third doubles match of the afternoon.

Al-Mutawa will also be competing in the singles draw where he will face Ukranian born Sergiy Stakhovsky, who defeated seven-time winner and defending champion Roger Federer in the second round of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships. Should Al-Mutawa advance past the first round in singles, he will meet the winner of top-seeded Djokovic and fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic in the second round.

Djokovic, who turned pro in 2003, has won a combined 48 titles in both singles and doubles, amassed a 604-140 record and has collected over $70 million in winnings throughout his career. He has been ranked as the world No. 1 by the ATP a total of 125 weeks, and has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, the most recent being the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.

For Al-Mutawa, the Qatar Open will be his second experience in major international play in less than six months. The sophomore previously represented his home country of Qatar in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea back in September.
