Coastal’s Bowman, Burke claim All-American honors

Coastal Carolina’s Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va.) and Aaron Burke (Shawnee, Kan.) were named to the Louisville Slugger All-American third team, as selected by Collegiate Baseball.

The two become the 23rd and 24th Chanticleers to earn All-American honors.

Bowman, also a third team selection by CollegeSportsMadness.com, is the 2012 Big South Player of the Year and was named to the Big South All-Tournament this past week, batting .692 for the four games. He is batting .401 to rank 11th in the NCAA, while his 91 hits ranks 13th nationally. Also, he has scored 59 runs, 26th-best in the nation. The senior leads the Big South in total bases (131) and a .483 on base percentage to rank 44th and 23rd, respectively, in the NCAA.

Bowman was a two time Big South Player of the Week, earning NCBWA National Hitter of the Week once as well. He is the first player in Big South history to score 200 career runs, have 200 career RBI and have 300 career hits. He owns CCU career records for games played (243), games started (241), at bats (953), hits (305), RBI (204) and total bases (520). He also owns the Big South career records for at bats and total bases, while ranks third in games played, second in hits (five shy of the conference mark), fourth in home runs (46) and third in RBI (12 shy of the conference mark).

Burke was the 2012 Big South co-Pitcher of the Year and Big South Tournament co-MVP. He has a Big South-best 1.18 ERA, which ranks second-best in the NCAA. In fact, over the last 10 NCAA ranking periods, Burke has ranked first or second eight times and no lower than seventh. Burke additionally posted a Big South-best 10 wins, which ranks 11th in the NCAA. The junior also has seven saves, fifth-best in the Big South. Of his Big South-best 34 appearances, Burke has pitched 2.0-plus innings 21 times.

Burke’s 1.18 ERA for 2012 is currently a Big South single season record while his two-year career ERA of 1.79 also stands as a league record. Former Chanticleer All-American and 2010 Big South Pitcher of the Year Anthony Meo ended his career with a 2.52 ERA to currently stand and the league mark.
