Chants ranked 24th; Bowman earns Big South weekly title

After going 4-0 this past week and reaching the 30-win plateau, Coastal Carolina jumped into the Collegiate Baseball rankings at 24th, while senior Daniel Bowman was recognized as the Big South Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week.

Coastal Carolina also announced on Monday that Josh Conway, the 2012 Big South and Baseball America Preseason Pitcher of the Year, will miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury. Conway is 4-1 this season in nine starts with a 2.14 ERA, getting 50 strikeouts in 54.2 innings.

The Chants, 30-13 overall and 12-3 in Big South play, host Campbell (33-12, 9-6) in a key conference tilt this weekend. The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 2 pm, and a single game Sunday, also set for 2 pm. Coastal is also receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ top 25 – coming in at 32nd.

Bowman batted .611 (11-for-18) and accounted for 14 of the team’s 26 runs with 10 runs scored and five RBI. He also had one double, one home run and two stolen bases in helping the Chanticleers sweep Liberty to win their fifth conference series of the year.  He scored the game-winning run in two games and was 6-for-9 with runners on base.

Bowman started his week with three hits and four runs at Clemson, and followed that outing with two hits, two runs and a solo home run in the series opener at Liberty.  In game two against the Flames, Bowman accounted for three of Coastal’s four runs and was 3-for-5 at the plate.  He went 3-for-5 in the finale with three RBI and was responsible for five of the Chants’ seven scores.  For the week, Bowman had a .650 on-base percentage and .833 slugging mark.

Bowman has a seven-game hit streak and has reached base safely (hit/walk/hit by pitch) in 28 consecutive games.

This is the second time Bowman has earned the weekly Big South honor. He has also been the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week once this season.
