Coastal’s Flanagan breaks his own school, league record

Senior Jason Flanagan rewrote the Big South and Coastal Carolina record book for the second time this season as he won the javelin at the rain shortened North Florida Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Flanagan, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., threw for his record distance of 72.87m (239-01) on his first attempt of the day. Flanagan nearly outdid himself on his second attempt with a throw of 72.34m (237-04). The senior’s winning throw easily bested second-place finisher Andy Fahringer of Virginia by over two meters.  Fahringer entered the meet with the third rankedjavelin throw in the NCAA East Region this season after placing 11th in the country in 2011.

Freshman Michael Deitzler and sophomore Tyler Slapikas also turned in top 10-worthy finishes in the javelin. Deitzler placed seventh as he threw for 51.97m (170-06) followed immediately by Slapikas in eighth with a season-best distance of 51.23m (168-01).

Brittany Connor took home a fourth-place finish in the discus with a heave of 45.62m (149-08) on her third attempt of the afternoon. Connor’s throw was Coastal’s best of the season and one of the top three efforts in the Big South this season. Anjulia Nicholson followed Connor with a final distance of 40.59m (133-02) to place 10th.  Naomi Atkins rounded out the Chanticleer contingent with a 17th-place distance of 34.32m (112-07).

Jumps

Kierra Gabe placed third in the 19-competitor high jump field as she cleared 1.72m (5-07.75). The senior cleared her final height on her first attempt before attempting to break her own school record of 1.75m (5-08.75). However, Gabe was unsuccessful on three attempts at 1.77m (5-09.75).

On the men’s side, freshman Reggie Nelson tied for second in the high jump with a final height of 2.02m (6-07.50). Classmate Aaron Noble finished right behind Nelson as he successfully cleared 1.97m (6-05.50). The event marked the season debuts for both Nelson and Nobel. The duo will be looked upon to fill the void left by conference and CCU record holder Jacques Watson, who graduated last spring.

Anna Carnegie placed seventh in her flight and 17th overall in the triple jump. The South Carolina State transfer leapt for a season-best 10.71m (35-01.75) on her first attempt.

The men’s triple jump was not completed due to inclement weather.

Hurdles

Sophomore Ashley Davis led a trio of Chants in the 100m hurdles finals with a third place finish.  A. Davis, who advanced to the finals with a 14.18 during Friday’s preliminaries, nearly matched her qualifying time with a 14.19. Christina Davis broke the tape in 14.61 to place ninth. Camille Hurley stopped the clock in 14.78 to take home 11th.

The Chants four student-athletes competing in the men’s 110m hurdles finished within .14 second of one another. Newcomer Carrington Fernandors shaved two tenths off his preliminary time as he ran a 14.97 to record Coastal’s quickest time of the year and a ninth-place finish. Senior Shane Norris finished on the heels of Fernandors in 10th with a 14.98 split. Russel Kanner ran a 15.02 to place 11th followed by Tre’von Gee (15.11) in 13th.

Sprints

The women’s 400m was the only sprinting event completed on the day. Santresa Jamison took home ninth in the event with a clock stopping time of 56.54. Sharmaine Barnes placed 17th in the 33-athlete field as she crossed the line in 57.86.

Relays

The 4x100m men’s relay quartet of Tyler Askew, Corey Jameson, Joseph Wilson and Ronnie Jackson placed fourth with a 41.62. The foursome posted Coastal’s top time of the season despite this being the first time the four competed together.

Coastal’s “A” 4x100m women’s relay team of Lee, Erica Peake, A. Davis and Qwontajah Thompson also posted a season-best time with a 45.10 to place sixth. The Chants “C” team of C. Davis, Mary Lawrence, Hurley and Carnegie turned in a time of 51 flat, finishing ninth.

Mid-Distance/Distance

Senior Christian Johnson was just a tick off her season-best time in the 800m as she crossed the finish line in 2:12.36 to finish ninth in the 46-competitor field. Sophie Perry, making her 800m collegiate debut, finished 18th with a time of 2:16.32. Shelby Nicosia ran a 2:19.73, placing 24th overall.

Tim Bryson and Stevie Brunson competed in their first collegiate 800m. Bryson, a freshman, ran a 1:58.52 to place 26th followed by Brunson in 36th with a 2:00.68.

Coastal will split its squads again next week as competitors head to both the Duke Invitational and Florida Relays on April 6-7.
