Coastal’s Hedrick selected in second round of MLS Draft

Coastal Carolina University defensive midfielder Cyprian Hedrick, the 2011 Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year, was the 30th overall pick of the 2012 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, held Thursday at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Hedrick was selected by Sporting Kansas City with the tenth pick of the second round.  Hedrick will join first round pick Dom Dwyer, who played collegiately at South Florida, for the start of preseason training at the end of the month.  Sporting finished the 2011 season atop the Eastern Conference after tallying 51 points with a 13-9-12 overall record.

“I am really pleased with Cyprian individually,” said head coach Shaun Docking.  “He worked extremely hard to create this opportunity for himself.  His selection is also a great honor for the program.  It goes to show that we had a very good year and when the team as a whole has a good year, good things happen to players on the individual level.”

Hedrick is the fourth Chanticleer to be drafted by a Major League Soccer club in the SuperDraft and seventh overall, including supplemental draft selections.  His 30th overall selection is the second highest behind Joseph Ngwenya’s third overall selection in the 2004 draft.
Hedrick was recently honored as a 2011 NSCAA Men’s Collegiate Scholar All-American first team selection in addition to being named to the Big South All-Academic team.  He was also selected a First Team All-Big South member for his superb efforts along the Chanticleer backline.  Hedrick was tabbed to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week as Coastal defeated then 16th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth and George Washington. The Friendswood, Texas, native helped the Chanticleer defense hold opponents to only 0.90 goals per game and a 9.7% shot percentage.
