Coastal-NC State deciding game delayed till Tuesday

ccubase-loseEditor’s Note: The NCAA Raleigh Regional Championship game was suspended in the top of the ninth. Coastal has bases loaded, one out and trailing North Carolina State 5-3. The game will resume Tuesday at 2 pm. The game started an hour-and-40 minutes late (at 7:40 pm Monday) due to rain and endured a 39-minute rain delay in the top of the fifth and a suspended at 12:05 am in the top of the ninth.

Top seed North Carolina State, playing out of the loser’s bracket, scored six runs in the fourth inning as part of an 8-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in the first game of the NCAA Regional Championship Monday afternoon at Doak Field.

The Wolfpack and Chanticleers will meet once again Monday evening at 6 pm to play for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regional.

NC State relief pitcher Will Gilbert (5-1) was solid in pitching the final eight innings. He allowed just five hits and one run with a walk and nine strikeouts.

NC State got on the scoreboard first. Chance Shepard drew a leadoff walk and took third on a one-out single by Stephen Pitarra. Evan Mendoza followed with an RBI single and the Wolfpack once gain had runners on the corners. However, Zack Hopeck induced an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.

The Wolfpack extended their lead to 7-0 with six runs in the fourth. Joe Dunand hit a leadoff single and Brock Deatherage followed with a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. NC State went on to load the bases when Brett Kinneman was hit by a pitch, Josh McLain walked and Stephen Pitarra walked. Mendoza came through with a two-run double and Preston Palmeiro followed with a two-run single.

NC State pushed it advantage to 8-0 in the sixth. Shepard drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Pitarra hit a ground ball back to the pitcher and an error on the play allowed Shepard to score. The Chants avoided a big inning as, with the bases loaded, Dunand hit into a double play.

Coastal voided the shutout when G.K. Young drilled a solo home run over the right center field wall for his 16th round-tripper of the season.

Hopeck (3-3) suffered the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four hits, two walks and five runs.
