Coastal’s Peake, Nicholson capture Big South honors

Senior Erica Peake has been named the Big South Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the second time already this season, while senior Anjulia Nicholson earned honorable mention honors from the league, it was announced on Wednesday.

Peake won two individual events and played a part in setting two school records during last weekend’s Virginia Tech Invitational to earn the fifth conference weekly indoor honor of her career.

The standout sprinter set a new CCU mark of 23.96 in winning the 200 meters and clocked a personal-best time of 7.46 to take first in the 60-meter dash. Peake also helped the 4×400 relay team to a runner-up finish with a school-record time of 3:45.76. She clocked a split of 55.1 in the anchor leg. In addition, the Spartanburg native established a new personal-best of 18-10.75 in the long jump to place third in the meet.

Peake’s 200-meter time is best in the Big South this season and ranked 21st in the nation, while the 60-meter time is second in the conference and 33rd in the country. The time of the 4×400 relay team, which also included Jessica Gelibert, Qwontajah Thompson and Sharmaine Barnes, ranks first in the BSC and 42nd nationwide.

Nicholson garnered Big South Field Athlete honorable mention status after placing third in the weight throw at Virginia Tech with a personal-best mark of 55-11.25.

As a team, Coastal currently owns 15 top-three spots in the Big South rankings. Peake is also first in the long jump, while Gelibert has the top 400-meter time (56.46).  Gelibert (8.63) and Ashley Davis (8.65) are second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Nicholson ranks second in the weight throw, while Thompson is second in the 400 meters (56.67) and third in the 200 meters (24.80). Teka Simpson stands second in the long jump (18-1.5) and third in the high jump (5-5). Additionally, Letitia Saayman (10:10.77) and Emily Marchini (10:11.01) rank second and third, respectively, in the 3,000 meters. The distance medley team of Jessica Dennison, Christina Davis, LaChelsie Thomas and Shelby Nicosia is also ranked first with their time of 12:26.20.

The Chanticleers next compete in the George Mason Patriot Games Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26 in Fairfax, Va. Junior Anna Carnegie and freshman Vanita Pulliam are scheduled to participate in the pentathlon on Friday, with all of the other events set for Saturday.
