Coastal’s Quolas captures Big South pitching honor

ccusoft-20pitch2015Coastal Carolina’s Kiana Quolas was named the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played March 23-29, the league announced Monday.

Quolas was 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA in two starts during the Chanticleers’ three-game sweep of Winthrop on Friday and Saturday. She allowed just one run and six hits in 12 innings of work with 15 strikeouts and just three walks. She tossed a two-hitter with a season-high eight strikeouts in the series opener and followed with a four-hit shutout and seven strikeouts in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year has totaled 22 strikeouts in her last three starts and improved to 4-1 in conference games this season.

Quolas is making her way up the Big South’s career pitching lists, now ranking among the top 10 in wins, complete games, innings and strikeouts. The senior righthander stands sixth with 83 career victories and 741.2 innings and tied for seventh with 93 complete games. She now has 558 strikeouts, which rank third at Coastal and 10th all-time in the conference. It is the 15th time that Quolas has claimed the weekly conference honor.

Meanwhile, fellow senior Kory Hayden now ranks in the top five in Big South history for both home runs and RBIs. Already second with her 56 home runs, two shy of the record, the slugger moved into fourth in RBIs with 170 during the Winthrop series. CCU Hall of Famer Sherry Johnson is the conference’s co-record holder with 194. Additionally, junior Bri Chiusano recorded her 100th career stolen base on Friday and now has 101, third-most all-time in the Big South.

The Chanticleers (18-15) will take a season-high five-game winning streak into a doubleheader against N.C. State on Wednesday at Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium. N.C. State (19-13) will be the Chants’ fifth ACC opponent this season. The Wolfpack have played two other Big South teams, beating Campbell 3-1 and losing to Longwood 5-1. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
