Coastal’s Ribeiro named to All-American second team

ccusoc-ribeirokickAfter leading Coastal Carolina to the NCAA Tournament Third Round for the second consecutive season, Pedro Ribeiro earned All-American honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Friday.

Ribeiro, who was named the 2013 Big South Attacking Player of the Year, earned second team NSCAA All-American honors after finishing his senior campaign with 11 goals and seven assists. It is Ribeiro’s second career All-American plaudit as he was named a third team All-American in 2011.

Ribeiro is only the third Chanticleer to be named an All-American in multiple seasons, joining Ashton Bennett (2011 and 2012) and Joseph Ngwenya (2002 and 2003). Overall, six Chants have earned All-American honors from the NSCAA, including Guy Norcott (1992), Ngwenya (2002 and 2003), Boyzzz Khumalo (2003), Mubarike Chisoni (2003), Ribeiro (2011 and 2013) and Bennett (2011 and 2012).

The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native led the 2013 Chanticleers to a NCAA-high 19 wins and the Big South regular season and tournament championships. Throughout his time in Conway, Ribeiro paced Coastal Carolina to a NCAA-best 69-20-4 overall record and an equally impressive 33-3-1 Big South mark.

With Ribeiro leading the attack, the Chanticleers ended the season ranked second in the NCAA with 47 total goals, third with 44 assists and second with 138 points. Overall, CCU finished the season ranked 11th of 202 teams with a 1.96 goals per game average.

Ribeiro, who was also tabbed to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region first team and Big South Tournament MVP, finished his Coastal Carolina career ranked 11th all-time with 31 goals, tied for sixth with 26 assists, ninth with 88 points (31g, 26a) and second with 249 shot attempts. He also ranks second in the CCU record book with 86 career matches played and tied for eighth with 74 appearances in the starting XI. He led the Chanticleers to four NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Tournament wins, three Big South regular season championships and two Big South tournament championships. Moreover, he became just the third Chanticleer to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.

Ribeiro will now focus his attention on the professional ranks. He is one of 50 seniors throughout NCAA Division I invited to the MLS Combine. The combine takes place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Jan. 10-14.
