Coastal’s season ends one victory short of CBI crown

ccuhoops-wyoThe Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team’s season finally came to an end Friday with an 83-59 loss at Wyoming in the CBI Championship game.

Demario Beck had a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds, but foul trouble limited the junior to 21 minutes.  Jaylen Shaw was the only other Chant to reach double digits with 10 points.

CCU (20-19) finished the game shooting 34 percent (21-62) from the field, and once again struggled from beyond the arc only hitting four of 21 (19%).  The Chants managed to hit 13 of its 17 free throws for 77 percent.

The home-standing Cowboys shot 43 percent (29-68) from the field, but once again reached double-digits in three point field goals hitting 13 of 37 (35%).  They also hit 12 of 16 at the free throw line.

CCU scored 22 points in the paint and turned 11 offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points.

Hayden Dalton came off the bench to spark the Cowboys to score a game-high 19 points.  He hit five three point field goals and also completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Justin James was the only other Cowboy to reach double-digits with 17 points.

Wyoming out rebounded CCU 44-39 and scored 18 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds.

Wyoming carried a 42-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Wyoming held a 20-19 lead, but a flagrant one foul called on the Chanticleers ignited a 15-0 run and before two free throws from Labinowicz stopped the run, the Cowboys led35-19.

Wyoming shot 40 percent in the opening 20 minutes and hit eight of 23 three point field goals.  Dalton came off the bench to lead the first half scoring with 11 points and James added nine.

CCU shot 32 percent from the field and missed all eight of its three point field goals on its way to its 19-point deficit.  Elijah Wilson scored six points and Beck added five.

The game was the final game for seniors Shivaughn Wiggins, Michele Enanga and Elijah Wilson.  Wiggins playing for the first time in three weeks finished the game with three points.  Enanga had an assist and steal, while Wilson finished his storied career with six points and two rebounds.  Wilson now has 1,886 career points, finishing third on the all-time scoring list.
