Coastal’s Soderberg named to Ping All-American team

Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg was named honorable mention PING All-American as selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Soderberg, ranked 53rd in the nation in the final Golfstat Cup Standings and 55th by Golfweek, becomes the fourth Chanticleer to make the prestigious squad, joining Dustin Johnson (third team in 2005 and ’06; first team in ’07), Lindsay Renolds (honorable mention in 2007) and Zack Byrd (third team in 2009).

Soderberg (Ojersjo, Sweden) capped his Coastal Carolina career this past spring by being named 2013 Big South Men’s Golfer of the Year and being the first Chanticleer to be a three-time PING/GCAA All-Region selection.  He additionally is the third Chant to be a four-time All-Big South honoree and the second Chant to be a three-time Academic All-Big South selection. Furthermore, he was a finalist to represent Team Europe at this summer’s Palmer Cup.

In 14 events this past season, Soderberg had 10 top 10 finishes, including seven in the top five. He averaged 72.28 strokes over his 39 rounds, ranking fifth on the CCU single-season list behind Johnson’s averages in 2007 (70.40), ’06 (71.80) and ’05 (72.21) and Byrd’s 2009 scoring average (72.03). Soderberg posted 18 rounds at par or better, including seven rounds in the 60’s this past season. Soderberg closed his senior campaign in impressive fashion as he reeled off seven straight top seven finishes – going 11-under par over the 18 rounds – with a win at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational and three runner-up finishes.

More importantly, Soderberg was the leader of a 2012-13 Chanticleer squad that reached the program’s fourth NCAA Championship – first berth since 2007 – and averaged 293.01 strokes per round to rank third on the CCU team scoring average list.

Soderberg was a two-time medalist in his career, also winning the 2012 Furman Intercollegiate, and averaged 73.45 strokes over his 143 career rounds to rank third on the CCU all-time list behind Johnson (72.11) and Alvaro Velasco (72.77).
